Guided Tissue Regeneration
In some cases, bone loss around a tooth happens in such a way that it may be possible to “re-grow” tissues that support the tooth. This may be critical to prevent loss of the tooth.
The procedure is done with local freezing. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation is available to make you more comfortable. After you are fully anesthetized, the gum tissue will be gently reflected to allow access to the tooth root and eroded bone. The tooth root is cleaned thoroughly. Graft materials are then placed in the area of lost bone. Gums are sutured back into position over the materials and allowed to heal. This procedure is minimally invasive and typically done in a short visit to our office.
After the procedure
Minor swelling of the surgical site is to be expected in the first few days. It is recommended to ice the area on and off for the first 24 hours. Dr. Lamberts will recommend or prescribe medication to manage any discomfort you may experience. Detailed post operative instructions will be given to you before and after the procedure.
The expected results for your specific case will be discussed with you during your consultation appointment. This procedure is only successful in people who take excellent care of their teeth and gums at home, and who are committed to a regular schedule of dental cleanings (periodontal maintenance visits). This procedure is often successful in rebuilding bone and tissue attachment to the tooth - improving its long term stability!
