 2014 Lamberts Dentistry Professional Corporation

Gingival (gum) grafting with Alloderm

Soft tissue "gum" grafts are used in areas where the gum tissue around your teeth or implants is very thin or where you have recession (tooth root exposure). The goal of this procedure is to thicken the tissue around your teeth and cover some or all of the exposed root.

The procedure

The procedure is done with local freezing. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation is available to help you feel more comfortable. During the procedure, Dr.Lamberts will use matrix of tissue (ex: Alloderm) to thicken the tissue around your teeth and cover some or all of the exposed root. The graft tissue will be placed over the area of exposed roots and sutured into place. The sutures will be removed at your follow-up appointment in 2-4 weeks.

After the procedure

Minor swelling of the surgical site is to be expected in the first few days. It is recommended to ice the area on and off for the first 24-48 hours. Dr. Lamberts will recommend or prescribe medication to manage any discomfort you may experience. Detailed post operative instructions will be given to you before and after the procedure.

The results

The expected results for your specific case will be discussed with you during your consultation appointment. In many cases, Dr Lamberts will be able to cover exposed roots due to gum recession. Most importantly, the graft will thicken deficient gum tissue to help prevent further recession and provide a stronger attachment for the tooth/teeth. Gum grafting may also reduce tooth sensitivity and improve the look of your smile.
