Crown Lengthening

Often when a tooth is broken down or has a large filling, there is insufficient tooth above the gum line to place a new filling or crown (cap). In many cases, placement of a crown is critical to avoid further tooth breakdown. Crown lengthening is a procedure where the gum tissue and underlying bone are reshaped to expose more tooth above the gum line.

The procedure

This procedure  is done with local freezing. Nitrous oxide sedation is available to make you more comfortable. Once you are anesthetized , Dr. Lamberts will gently remove some excess gum tissue and reflect the gums away from the teeth. In many cases, a very small amount of bone is removed around the tooth. When the procedure is complete, the gums are sutured in position.

After the procedure

Minor swelling of the surgical site is to be expected in the first few days. It is recommended to ice the area on and off for the first 24-48 hours. Dr. Lamberts will recommend or prescribe medication to manage any discomfort you may experience. Detailed post operative instructions will be given to you before and after the procedure.

The results

The expected results for your specific case will be discussed with you during your consultation appointment. The result will allow your dentist to place a well-fitting and easy to clean crown or filling on your tooth. It can also help to improve the appearance of your front teeth, if you have a "gummy" smile or if your teeth appear short (see esthetic crown lengthening).
